Chapter 7

By the time they left to return home Sunday night, Lacy was exhausted. After spending a few hours at the garden, they found another of her favorite restaurants for supper. After what had happened that morning, she was relieved when no one recognized her. If they had, she was afraid they'd have had to order food delivered to their room, or hit the fast food joints until they left town.

Finally, Alec handed her the keys to his truck and asked for the grand tour, so she drove him around the neighborhood where she’d grown up, pointing out the house her parents had lived in from the day they’d married until they’d moved to Boyne City.

Today had been much of the same, visiting old haunts, hoping for a glimpse of the old coot who had done this to her. She'd gotten past the cutting disappointment each time they didn't find him and just resigned herself to the fact that Alec had been wrong. Sure, she'd gotten a glimpse of her kids, but other than that, the trip had been a waste of their time and his money.

Now, no more than an hour from home and Lacy wished she could pull herself out of the funk that had fallen over her like a wet blanket the moment they’d left the Grand Rapids city limit.

Most of the drive had been quiet, Alec having given up on trying to make conversation not twenty minutes into the long trip. She’d known he was trying, in part, to take her mind off the fact that they’d not seen hide nor hair of Fred. And while she appreciated his efforts, it was beginning to sink in that she was going to be trapped in the past forever. There was nothing he, or anyone, could do to make her feel better about that, or the fact that she was missing her children, both as toddlers and adults.

It just wasn’t fair that she couldn’t be with them in either time period, and when they’d gotten in the truck to head north, it had hit her hard that life as she'd known it was over forever.

Now, as she lay in the bed in the guest room of a cabin that had once belonged to her nineteen years in the future, she stared at the faint hint of dawn through a small gap in the curtains. It was in that moment she resolved to let her other life go.

Clearly, there was nothing she could do to get back to it. And technically, it wasn’t like she wouldn’t get to welcome grandkids and celebrate future holidays, and birthdays, and anniversaries with them because she would. At least her younger self would—unless Lacy Baker was destined to keep traveling back to 1995 each time she arrived at the cabin.

The thought made her shiver and she threw the covers back, swinging her legs over the edge of the mattress. Today was a new day. A new beginning. She would start earning her keep by helping Alec with the painting and papering job.
